Where did the name "Good News" come from?
The name originates from two different but connected sources. First, the Old English phrase meaning "Good News", "God spell", survives in English today as the word "gospel", a writing that describes the life, ministry, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The second and more ancient source is the Koine Greek word "evangelium", which can be translated "glad tidings", "the gospel", or "Good News".
How long as Good News existed?
Good News United Methodist Church has been at its present location since 1998 and was a "church plant" at Topsail Beach State Park prior to that date. The newest structure, the Worship Center, was completed in 2007.
What do you believe at Good News?
Our belief structure is summarized in the What We Believe section of this website. We are Wesleyan in doctrine and believe God's grace, love, and salvation is available to all who choose to believe into the message and accept Christ as Lord and Savior.
Who are the people of Good News?
The people of Good News are a very eclectic and diverse group from all walks of life. We are young, old, children, youth, conservative, progressive, poor, wealthy, and from many nations. What brings us together is a love for God, God's people, and the pursuit of growth in God's grace.
What Bible do you use?
Neither Good News nor the United Methodist Church prescribes a version of the Scripture. We are orthodox and study the Protestant version of Scripture in many translations, including the New King James, New Living Translation, New International Version, King James Translation, New Revised Standard Translation, and many more. Our senior pastor most often preaches from the New Living Translation because he personally knows and trusts several of the translators of this version.
What is your average age?
Good News is very diverse in terms of age, having people and groups for all ages. We have an active Prime Timers Group (for the over 50 crowd) and multiple children and youth ministry possibilities. There is a place and a connection for anyone who seeks to worship here.
